“How many backlinks should I buy?” We still get that question. The answer: none. SEO has changed fundamentally over the past few years, but the internet is full of advice from five years ago. The result: SMEs putting time and money into tactics that no longer work, or worse, that get them penalised. Time to clear this up. Here is what actually works in 2026 for small businesses, and what you can pick up yourself this month.
What no longer works (and why you should stop)
- Keyword stuffing. Cramming your keyword onto a page ten times does nothing except make your text unreadable. Google’s algorithms have understood context for years, not exact word repetition.
- Buying thousands of backlinks. Link farms and cheap paid link packages are not just useless, they can earn your site a penalty. Ten relevant, quality links outweigh a thousand worthless ones.
- Endless meta keyword lists. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for more than ten years. Time spent there is time not spent on real SEO.
In short: no more shortcuts. What remains is fundamental work that does produce results, and that is good news, because an SME can handle that work itself.
1. Strong local SEO: being visible where your customer searches
For an SME with a physical location or a regional service area, local SEO is often the fastest route to more customers. Google increasingly shows a local results block at the top of the search page, above the regular organic results.
Concrete actions this month
- Claim and optimise your Google Business Profile: correct opening hours, category, photos of your premises and your work, and a full description that includes your region.
- Actively ask satisfied customers for reviews. Respond to every review, positive and negative.
- Write one local content page or blog article per month with your city or region in the title, for example “plumber in [town]” instead of just “plumber”.
- Make sure your business name, address and phone number (NAP) are identical everywhere: on your website, Google, social media and online business directories.
- Get listed on relevant local platforms and trade associations. Every local, relevant mention counts.
2. Technical foundation, speed and mobile usability
Great copy on a slow, outdated website gets you nowhere. Google explicitly judges how fast your site loads and how well it works on a smartphone, and your visitor drops off before the page has even finished loading. Concrete actions this month
- Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights or Search Console and note the biggest bottlenecks.
- Compress heavy images; this is usually the fastest win for load time.
- Check on a smartphone that all buttons, forms and menus work smoothly, not just that the text is readable.
- Make sure you have a valid SSL certificate (https) and fix broken links or 404 pages.
- Remove unnecessary plugins, scripts or trackers that slow your site down without adding value.
3. GEO and AI visibility alongside classic SEO
More and more people no longer search via Google, but ask their question directly to ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. If your business does not appear in that answer, you simply do not exist for that customer. This is called GEO, generative engine optimisation, and it is the next layer on top of classic SEO, not a replacement. We wrote about it earlier in why ChatGPT cannot find your business.
Concrete actions this month
- Ask ChatGPT a few questions a customer would ask (“best [your service] in [your region]”) and check whether you appear.
- Write clear, factual content that answers questions directly: AI systems prefer to cite a straight answer over promotional copy.
- Structure content with clear subheadings and lists, so AI tools can extract the right information faster.
- Keep your business information consistent and current on your website and external platforms, because AI models combine multiple sources.
Action checklist for this month
- Complete and maintain your Google Business Profile
- Actively ask three customers for a review
- Write one local content page
- Test site speed and fix the biggest bottleneck
- Test the site on a smartphone
- “Google” yourself via ChatGPT and check whether you appear
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take to produce results?
Expect three to six months for a noticeable improvement in rankings and traffic. Local SEO actions, such as optimising your Google Business Profile, can take effect faster.
Does a small SME really need an SEO agency?
You can start many of the actions above yourself. An agency mainly helps you do it structurally, consistently and technically correctly, so you do not lose time on things that do not work.
Is GEO more important than classic SEO now?
No, they reinforce each other. A technically healthy, locally strong website is still the foundation that AI visibility is built on.
