Why is my business
not showing on Google Maps?

You search for your own business and a competitor two streets away shows up instead. In almost every case the cause sits in your Google Business Profile and not in your website. Below are the causes we run into most often at Flemish businesses, with the checks you can do yourself in a few minutes.

Start here

One minute to find out what is actually wrong

Open Google Maps in an incognito window and type your business name plus your town.

If your business appears with photos, opening hours and a Directions button, the profile exists and you have a ranking problem. If you only get an address marker without a profile card, the business was never claimed. If you get nothing at all, there is no profile or verification is still stuck. Those three outcomes lead to three different fixes, so run the check before you read on.

Nowhere to be found

Your business does not appear on the map at all

Four causes, ordered by how often we see them.

1. The profile was never claimed

An address on Maps is not yet a business profile. Until you claim and verify the business in Google Business Profile, you stay a dot on the map with no hours, no photos and no call button. Claiming is free and takes about fifteen minutes.

2. Verification is stuck

Google increasingly asks new businesses for a video of the premises, the equipment and the sign on the door. If that video is rejected or never sent, the profile stays pending and customers cannot see it. Check the status in your dashboard and submit the video again.

3. The profile is suspended

A virtual office, a home address with no visible sign or a business name stuffed with keywords all trigger a suspension. You notice it because the profile disappears from Maps while you still see it in your dashboard. Correct the details first, then request reinstatement.

4. There are two profiles

After a move or a rename the old profile usually survives. Two profiles for one business split your reviews and your signals, so neither one is strong enough to rank. Duplicates can be merged through Google Business Profile.

Visible but buried

You are on the map, yet nobody finds you

This is the situation at most businesses we look at. The profile exists, but three competitors sit above you when someone searches for your service.

5. The primary category is wrong

The primary category carries more weight than every other field. If it says Shop or Company while people search for Roofer or Physiotherapist, you never make that list. Set the primary category to the exact word your customer types and move the rest to secondary categories.

6. Too few recent reviews

Twelve reviews from 2022 weigh less than four from this month. Google reads rhythm and freshness as well as volume. Ask for a review after every finished job, using a short link by text or email, and reply to each one that comes in.

7. Your details contradict each other

If your phone number differs between your site and Maps, or your Facebook page still carries the old address, Google cannot tell which version is right. Make name, address and phone identical everywhere and link to your profile from your contact page.

Showing up on Maps is not a favour from Google, it is a profile that is complete and verified.

Everything above you can check yourself without paying anything and without calling anyone. If you get stuck on verification or on a suspension, we will take a look. In half the cases it turns out to be a wrong category or a forgotten duplicate profile.

Frequently asked

Business not on Google Maps

How long before my business shows on Google Maps?

After a successful verification you usually appear within a few days. Verification itself is the delay: a video check is often handled within a week, a postcard can take two weeks. If the status is still pending after three weeks, submit it again.

Can I appear on Maps without a shop or a visitable address?

Yes. Choose a service area instead of an address, for example your province or a list of towns. Your street then stays hidden from visitors and you show up in the local results for that area. Listing an address you do not actually use is the fastest route to a suspension.

Does it help to ask customers for reviews?

Yes, and it is allowed. Asking for a review yourself is fine, buying or rewarding reviews is not. Send a short link after every finished job and reply to what comes in. A steady rhythm counts for more than ten reviews in one week.

My profile is suspended. What now?

Do not request reinstatement straight away. First correct what caused the suspension: remove keywords from the business name, fix the address or switch to a service area and put up a visible sign. Then request reinstatement with photos of the premises and proof of establishment.
